Conventional Orthodontics

Orthodontics involves the use of mechanical devices – typically, braces, expanders and retainers to reposition teeth.  The devices work by putting steady pressure on the teeth.  This pressure forces the tooth roots to move slowly through the socket bone in the jaws, and eventually into new positions.  (The bone actually remolds around the teeth, dissolving ahead of the pressure and re-forming behind.)  Though often done for cosmetic reasons (for example, to straighten crooked teeth) many orthodontic treatments are undertaken to correct mechanical problems with the bite. Left uncorrected, such problems can lead to tooth loss, TMJ pain, or other maladies.

Types of Orthodontic Braces and Brackets

Braces consist of brackets bonded (cemented) to the teeth, with wires threaded through the brackets. The wires exert the pressure that guides each tooth to its desired position. There are several types of orthodontic braces available, including the traditional metal braces, ceramic "tooth-colored" braces, and clear plastic braces.  Metal - stainless steel is a practical material, strong and easy to maintain, and still the most common choice. But if appearance is very important, ceramic or plastic can be used for better cosmetics.

Before you decide on a method of treatment, you should check with Silver Dental to find out what kinds of orthodontic braces are offered, and what dental insurance plans are accepted.

Damon Brackets

The Damon bracket, a recent innovation in orthodontics, uses a "sliding-door" technology that allows the wire to slide back and forth inside the bracket (as opposed to being rigidly clamped in place).  This reduces friction and is more comfortable for the patient.  Damon brackets also reduce treatment time and the number of office visits required for adjustments.

Ceramic "White" Brackets

Ceramic brackets are translucent; they blend in with natural tooth color. This makes them much less noticeable than traditional stainless steel braces – so your smile won’t look "metallic." In addition, ceramic brackets won't stain or discolor over long periods of time.  Not all teeth will accept ceramic brackets, but Dr. Silver can let you know if you are a candidate for them..

Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces generally remain the least expensive option.  Also, because they are still the strongest orthodontic system, metal braces may be the only alternative for those needing extensive realignment of the teeth. Dr. Silver will advise you whether metal orthodontic braces are necessary for your treatment.

Orthodontic Retainers

Retainers are removable appliances made from plastic and stainless steel wire.  They are used to hold a patient's teeth in place after their braces are removed. The retainer holds the teeth in their new positions as the surrounding gums and bone adjust around them. The amount of time a retainer must be worn varies, but many orthodontists recommend teenagers wear their retainers into their early 20s.
