TMJ Therapy

The New Jersey TMJ dentists at Silver Dental have extensive training and experience in the treatment of TMJ disorders. Debilitating neck, facial and jaw pain are often symptoms. Once an assessment is made, Silver Dental will start a personalized TMJ therapy plan to ease your pain as soon as possible. Contact Silver Dental today if you think you may have TMJ or TMD disorder and we’ll perform a screening so you know for sure. Some symptoms are:

• headaches
• facial Pain
• limited opening of the jaw
• dizziness
• jaw clicking, popping or grating
• difficulty closing teeth together
• jaw goes to one side when opening
• ringing or stuffiness in the ears
• neck pain
• blurred vision or pain behind eyes

We will perform a comprehensive head and neck exam, with a health history and x-rays. Other diagnostic techniques may also include our computerized equipment such as joint vibration analysis and EMG – electromyographic studies - and computerized jaw tracking.

To maximize your potential for successful treatment, Silver Dental works with other health care professionals. At times physical therapists, chiropractors, nutritionists, physicians, oral surgeons, and/or psychologists are part of the therapy process.

Silver Dental believes strongly in conservative, non-surgical treatment for TMJ Dysfunction. The most common treatment suggested is usually an oral appliance, also known as an orthotic or splint. Benefits of oral appliance treatment include:

• noninvasive treatment
• easily accepted by patients
• significant reduction or elimination of symptoms

The orthotic helps to stabilize the jaw joint and balance the bite so the teeth, muscles and joints all work in harmony -- without strain or pain. First, the focus is on addressing the pain and second we work to help patients regain full function. You are also taught self-care techniques to improve your condition between treatments.

Silver Dental can provide medication and other therapy necessary including:

• Iontophoresis – medication that is applied through the skin without injection
• TENS – measuring muscle activity
• nutrition counseling
• spray and stretch – a muscle stretching technique to control painful trigger points
• stress therapy
• hot/cold therapy
• cold laser

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD, TMJ or TMD)
TM joints are located in front of the ears and allow the jaw to open and close, move side to side, forward and backward. Unlike other joints of the body, these joints move in unison. When the jaw joints, muscles and teeth are not in the proper balance and alignment, pain is very often the result. TMD/TMJ disorders can be difficult to diagnose and treat because the problem often crosses over into several different specialties in medicine and dentistry.
